This I call my 'Margaret Atwood Summer'.
I have long been a fan of hers; yet, I have a renewed appreciation for her work after catching audio clips on the Web of interviews she's given both here and abroad.
For years, I've taught The Handmaid's Tale in my BS107 Women & Society course and found it to be an incredibly powerful way in which to convey totalitarianism and the effect of fundamentalism on women's rights. I decided to prioritize her complete body of work, both non-fiction and fiction, this summer and fall. In fact, my First Tuesday Book Group, has chosen her latest novel, Oryx and Crake, for our August read. After picking up some great buys at Wichita's annual literacy book fair this weekend, I indulged myself at Watermark books by purchasing her book of essays, reviews and personal prose, Writing with Intent. What a bright and witty mind!
